- The Fifth Child - Doris Lessing
- All Quiet of the Orient Express - Magnus Mills
- Peony in Love - Lisa See
- A Life of One's Own - A Guide to Better Living Through the Work
and Wisdom of Virginia Woolf - Ilana Simons
The book elections will take start in mid-November and end in mid-December. The final list should be published after Christmas.
If you have any international books to recommend for 2009, let me know. I will probably read a lot during my quiet Christmas.

Hi there--
I'm happy to find your site.
This notes comes from Ilana Simons, who wrote A Life of One's Own.
What's your bookclub? I love New Orleans and visit often--and maybe I could drop by the club.
visit me here:

and drop me an email!
thanks,
Ilana
Hey girl - great lists of books. I feel like I've hardly read any international fiction this year - I mean, not counting Canadian or British authors.
By the way, I gave you a blog award :)
Ilana - Your book inspired me not to be afraid of Virginia Woolf. I am preparing to buy To The Lighthouse this weekend!
I hope that your book wins a slot for next year's reading list. I will really campaign hard for it.
The book club meets on the third Wednesday of the month at 6:15 (but real start time is 6:30). On this site, look to the right and click on International Book Club of New Orleans to find out the dates. We never met for December and we might miss a few summer ones, in case of hurricane evacuations.
Iliana - Thanks for the award. I need to see your site. You are so sweet.
Some of the books that I read this year were because of the book club. Otherwise, I would have never picked them up.
I'd love to be in an international book club. I really need to read more by foreign authors, and your list sounds good. The Etty Hillesum is on my pile by the way!
Danielle, you read so much as it is. I don't know how you find the time to eat, sleep, work, and be with your loved ones.
I had to start the bookclub, because when I left Dallas to go to New Orleans, there was NO international book club.
